Dancing Machines

One Hip in the Grave might be a strange title for tonight’s belly-dance extravaganza, says Chris Keating, aka Chaya, who helped produce the performance and teach the students who are performing. It came about, she explains, because, “We were just thinking of a clever, Halloween-themed belly-dance name, and we thought the title combined both the seasonal theme and alluded to belly dance.”

The series of dance performances — both solo and group — will use both traditional Middle Eastern music and some surprising modern songs. “There will be sword dances, candle dances, drum solos and a little alternative music,” Chaya says. Not to mention Muse, Devo and Led Zeppelin.

Most of the performers are Chaya’s students from classes with the Highland Hills Parks and Recreation District. “Some of them are also in the performance troupe Serpent Moon that I’m in, and some are students of the other ladies, so it’s kind of a family affair. We always have such a good time,” she says.

Join in the good time tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street; admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under ten. Call 303-477-5977 or visit www.bugtheatre.info.
