Getting the Lead Out

Levi Leipheimer smashed Lance Armstrong’s record at the Leadville Trail 100 mountain-bike race this year, and Rebecca Rusch smashed her own women’s record on the course, finishing 22nd overall and ahead of most of her male competitors. Still, Race Across the Sky director Frank Matson, from Denver-based Citizen Pictures, says this year’s race had a different kind of compelling story. “The pro riders like Levi and Rebecca are machines, and it’s amazing to watch them,” he says. “Even more amazing are all the average, everyday riders who come out and attempt — and finish — this grueling race.”

Matson, who has raced across the sky in Leadville three times himself, had 25 cameras on the course this year, including one in a helicopter and one following the cyclists on a motorcycle. His film chronicling the action premieres tonight at 6 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre with a live roundtable discussion featuring Leipheimer, Rusch and Erik Weihenmayer (the first blind climber to summit Everest, who completed the race with a partner on a tandem mountain bike), as well as other athletes featured in the film; Race will be broad-cast to theaters in Denver and across the country by Fathom Events.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the show at the Paramount, 1621 Glenarm Place, are $25 at www.paramountdenver.com; admission to the Fathom Events live broadcasts at other theaters is $8.25. For a theater near you, visit www.fathomevents.com.
