The Snow Flies at Wintervention

Skiers and snowboarders have learned to count the passing of years — 61 of them — by the steady thrum of new films from Warren Miller Entertainment, the surest sign out there that a new winter season is upon us. The latest can be seen at the Wintervention film tour kickoff at the Boulder Theater tonight at 8 p.m. Screenings continue through November 14.

This year’s film is packed with nearly a dozen Colorado athletes, including Olympic champ Lindsey Vonn, Winter Dew Tour champ JJ Thomas, and extreme-skiing champ Chris Anthony. “I haven’t even seen the whole thing yet myself,” Anthony says. “I’ve been holding off to see it with the audience, which is the best way to truly enjoy these movies.” Anthony appears in a segment in the Stone Creek Chutes at Beaver Creek, filmed with a special camera shooting 350 frames per second so you can revel in the glory of every individual flake of powder flying up in his face.

“You’ll also get a kick out of Lindsey Vonn’s segment,” Anthony says. “She’s highlighted in there with some freeskiing, which she almost never gets to do, and it looks like she’s using the trees as gates, just bashing through.”

Tickets are $21.50 and come with vouchers for buy one-get one lift tickets at Winter Park, Crested Butte and Steamboat. After its run at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder, Wintervention heads to Denver’s Paramount Theatre November 17 through 21. For more information, visit www.skinet.com/warrenmiller.
