Art Spoken Here

The Denver Art Museum’s Logan Lectures, named for sponsors and art enthusiasts Vicki and Kent Logan, are always a big deal owing to the important speakers who are invariably featured. The art celebrity who be leading the discussion tonight is Richard Phillips, a New York-based painter renowned for his super-realistic portraits heavy with retro-glam. Currently, Phillips's “Tongue” is included in Focus: The Figure, and his “Mirror” (pictured) was in Face to Face earlier this year.

“Richard’s meticulous drawings and candy-colored canvases are a direct response to our being bombarded by fashion imagery and advertising,” explains DAM director Christoph Heinrich. “He captures and repurposes images of exaggerated and idealized stereotypes from today’s media that embrace the beauty and fantasy of air-brushed perfection. But when his pieces are presented in the setting of a museum, his work becomes quite satirical, even confrontational.”

Doors to the Sharp Auditorium, on the lower level of the DAM’s Hamilton Building, open at 6 p.m.; the event begins at 7. Admission is $8 for students, $12 for artists and members of DAM Contemporaries, $15 for DAM members and $18 for all others. For information, go to http://damcontemporaries.denverartmuseum.org; for reservations, call 720-913-0150.
