Game Ogre

There seems to be steady stream of green men gracing the Buell this season. First it was the big green guy who was “Puttin' on the Ritz” in Young Frankenstein last summer, and now the beloved ogre Shrek will turn the place into a swamp when the touring company of Broadway's Shrek the Musical hits the stage tonight. Perhaps it's just an anomaly that the Blue Man Group is up next in December?

At any rate, the musical, based on the Dreamworks movie based on the William Steig picture book, is nothing but good-natured fun, Donkey and all, with Broadway cast members Eric Petersen as Shrek, Haven Burton as Fiona and David Vaughn as Lord Farquaad leading the cast. And Donkey? Who better to fill the wise-ass sidekick's shoes than Alan Mingo Jr., who also brought to life The Little Mermaid's Sebastian the Crab on the Great White Way? And all of the movie's misfit storybook characters, from the Gingerbread Man to Pinocchio, will be in tow.

See Shrek daily except Mondays at the Buell Theatre, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, through November 28; there will be no performance on Thanksgiving. Admission ranges from $15 to $125; for showtimes and reservations, visit www.denvercenter.org or call 303-293-4100.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 & 7:30 p.m.; Wed., Nov. 24, 2 p.m. Starts: Nov. 16. Continues through Nov. 28, 2010
