Martyred Unknown

Between 1955 and 1968, there were approximately 130 murder cases connected to the civil rights movement. These murders fascinate Jake Adam York, and in his newest collection of poems, Persons Unknown, he looks closely at the unknown and oftentimes forgotten voices of the movement.

"It contributes to this ongoing series I have of poems dedicated to the martyrs of the civil rights movement," says York. "These poems try to recover the sense of their lives and their importance in the movement." This is York's third book of poems, and the second dealing with the civil rights movement. The twenty-odd poems in the slim tome cover everything from York's own musings while flipping through microfiche in a New Orleans library to stories of those who lost their lives in the movement.

York will be reading from Persons Unknown at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street; admission is free, but a copy of the book will run you $14.95. For more information, call 303-436-1070 or visit www.tatteredcover.com.
