Shall We Dance?

It was a party to end all parties, and The Last Waltz, the Band’s 1978 swan song, was in many ways also the end of an era, a celebration of popular music’s old guard giving way to the fresh sounds of the ‘80s. It was what Woodstock was to the ‘60s: one last ballet of roots and rock, featuring star after star on an elegant stage, the whole thing filmed from start to finish by Martin Scorsese and immortalized in the process..

The event’s significance hasn’t been lost on the local jam band Polytoxic, which latched on to the concept five years ago. Since then, Polytoxic has staged and restaged its Colorado-centric tribute, called The Last Waltz Revisited, using a horn section and guest musicians galore to trot out an all-Band repertoire. And it’s back tonight at the Gothic Theatre, 3263 South Broadway in Englewood, with opener Buck Perigo, who will join in the fun by re-creating Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” in its entirety.

The sixth annual Last Waltz Revisited gets under way at 8 p.m.; admission — $17 in advance, $20 at the door — benefits the Denver Rescue Mission. For more information, go to www.gothictheatre.com or call 303-297-1772.
Wed., Nov. 24, 8 p.m., 2010
