The Pride of Santa Fe

As anyone who’s crawled the Art District on Santa Fe on First Friday knows, the stretch of Santa Fe Drive between Alameda and Twelfth avenues is filled with talent. So when Dana Cain started planning the second annual Art District Best of 2010, she wanted a discerning eye to judge the entries. Who else but Westword art critic Michael Paglia?

“He did a fantastic job,” Cain enthuses. “I was so excited about having him do the jurying, because he just really loves looking at art. And he’s got some of that art-snob thing going on, too, which I think is probably essential for an art critic.” Paglia had to narrow the show down to about 35 works from a pool of 170 submissions — no small feat — and Cain, a big advocate of art collecting and local artists, promises that the result is stunning. “It will show the city of Denver how strong some of the work is here,” she says. “Overall, it’s going to be super-powerful.”

Art District Best of 2010 opens with a catered reception and awards gala from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at eventgallery 910Arts, 910 Santa Fe, and continues through January 16. Admission to the gala is only $5; get tickets in advance at http://artdistrictbest.eventbrite.com.
