A Carol Gone Awry

If there was a machine whose job it was to churn out Christmas stories -- and it’s possible that there is -- A Christmas Carol would be the default setting. Told and retold and told again for the past 150 years, its plot points are so ingrained in the collective consciousness that children are pretty much born with innate knowledge of Tiny Tim.

It was that hoariness that provided the impetus for Spotlight Theatre Company’s presentation of Inspecting Carol, a meta-comedy about a regional theater company’s production of A Christmas Carol going disastrously awry.

“We wanted to do something with a holiday theme,” explains Pat Payne, the show’s executive producer, “but there are so many productions of Christmas Carol in town every year, we just wanted to do something different. This basically takes A Christmas Carol and turns the script upside down.”

Expect hijinks to ensue when the show opens at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the John Hand Theater, 7653 East First Place in Lowry. The run continues Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. through December 18. For tickets, $20, and information, call 720-880-8727 or visit www.thisisspotlight.org.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 6 p.m. Starts: Nov. 27. Continues through Dec. 18, 2010
