Better Run, Turkey

Whether you’re looking for wholesome family fun or campy holiday weirdness on Thanksgiving, chances are you’ll find something at the 37th annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot. “Each year we have a handful of really serious runners, but the vast majority of people are families who have done the turkey trot for years,” says United Way spokesman Robert Thompson. They come, walk around the lake in Wash Park, and then go have their Thanksgiving dinner. Sometimes they dress up.”

As turkeys. That’s where the weirdness comes in.

The four-mile trot is a major annual fundraiser for the local chapter of United Way, which works with a variety of nonprofits that administer everything from preschool help to continuing education for grownups. Last year’s event brought out more than 10,000 trotters, which, at $40 per registration, amounts to an unqualified success.

Serious runners should show up at 8 a.m. at South Franklin and Louisiana streets in Washington Park to jockey for a prime spot, but the run doesn’t officially start until 10:15 a.m.; the family fun run starts at 11. Register at the event, or pre-register at www.unitedwaydenver.org. For more information, call 303-433-8383.
