Access Granted

We, the citizens of Denver, have been running Denver Open Media for exactly four years. And we’re doing an excellent job. Members create the content that appears on DOM’s cable channels using equipment provided by the organization, and the community votes on what gets top billing on TV. It’s a unique way of running public-access television, and it’s the most successful one of its kind in the country. Currently, DOM has over 200 active members. DOM is part of the larger Open Media Foundation, which also provides web design, graphics packages and video production, mostly for nonprofits. “It has definitely grown faster than we would have expected,” says Tony Shawcross, the foundation’s executive director. To celebrate the four-year anniversary, there will be a celebration with prizes for the top vote-getting DOM programs. There will also be a performance by Bobby C Sound TV, who will remix video clips from the first four years.

The party, which is free and open to the public, goes from 8 to 10 p.m. at the DOM studios, 700 Kalamath Street. A live broadcast of the event will run on DOM Channel 57 and KGNU 88.5 FM and 1390 AM. Find more information at www.denveropenmedia.org.
