Come, All Ye Faithful

Though secular standbys like “Jingle Bells” will probably get more conventional radio play this season, when it comes to Christmas music, Handel’s Messiahis still the undisputed king. As usual, that soaring Jesus-jam will serve as the centerpiece for the Lakewood Cultural Center’s Come One & All, Rejoice sing-in, an annual holiday tradition that brings together the Lakewood Symphony, the Lutheran Chorale, two high-school chorales and several soloists for an epic sing-along. Fittingly, it concludes with the famous Hallelujah Chorus.

This year’s show features an expanded roster and a bit more structure, edging further in the direction of a formal concert under the new direction of David Hodel. “We’re doing some more traditional carols and some more contemporary material,” says Lutheran Chorale president Linda Blandin -- and there’s some interesting stuff on the menu, such as one piece that turns a 1,500-year-old monastic chant into a canon and blends it with a traditional African song. “It’s not as much a sing-in as it has been,” Blandin notes, “but I’m sure people will still be singing along.”

Worst case, you can always chime in on “Hallelujah.” The show begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 South Allison Parkway; tickets are $15, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. To find out more, visit www.lakewood.org/hca or call 303-987-7845.
