The Power of Film

Film has the power to change perceptions and widen worldviews, often giving us a new perspective on life and transforming our communities, hopefully for the better. That is the goal of A Small Act: Film Screening and Conversation With Director Jennifer Arnold, organized by Facing History and Ourselves, part of the All-State Community Conversations series, a national program that seeks to promote civic engagement, individual and collective responsibility and tolerance.

“The All-State Foundation funds our program nationally, so each of the states has the opportunity to bring speakers of notoriety around civic-engagement issues. Sometimes they’re filmmakers sometimes they’re artists, journalists or scholars,” says Fran Sterling, director of the Denver chapter of Facing History and Ourselves.

A Small Act, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is a feature-length documentary about the power of generosity and gratitude. Following the film will be a twenty- to thirty-minute dialogue with the director, in which the audience is encouraged to ask questions.

Snacks will be provided during the program, which takes place tonight at the L2 Arts and Culture Center, 1477 Columbine Street, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. An RSVP is required, as seating is limited and is filling up quickly. Call 303-316-4848, ext. 237, or visit www.facinghistory.org/communityconversations.
Tue., Dec. 7, 6:30 p.m., 2010
