Accoridng to more than one article I have read, illegal immigrants cost the state of Ca alone over 19 billion dollars/yr, the debt California is in is 20 billion, guess you would have to talk to CA about how they arrived at that figure, one city, I believe in Va got rid of their illegals and the crime rate went down by over 35 percent, if you could get rid of 35 percent of your crime rate would you not do that? And this is just the violent crimes, does not include the minor crimes. Kick out the illegals, no amnesty or the politically correct term I guess is now the Dream act.

I'm really impressed by all the people who have written comments here who can instantly spot an 'illegal' in a hospital waiting room or elsewhere just by looking at them. Maybe those people should be working for the TSA!

Undocumented workers are not being deported because our economy would collapse if they suddenly disappeared. Large corporations have made sure of it. On the other hand, the work done on my house was much less expensive due to the labor costs. The workers worked hard, and anyone of you would do the same in the same circumstance. If the only way you could feed your family was to cross a border illegally for work, you would do it. If not, then you are a poor provider for your family!

What a bunch of bologne. I work in hospital auditing, and when the illegals come in, they act like prmadonnas, rude, obnoxious, DEMANDING services, for free, of cours, threatening to sue, if they do not get immediate service for free, each day costing thousands of dollars to give them free service, what you said there is a lie, why are you doing that.

So by this twisted logic, if I go on vacation for a month and a criminal tresspasser (there is no such thing as anauthorized immigrant) breaks in, eats my food, sleeps in my bed, and takes over my home for the month, I should be grateful that he left a $5 bill on the counter. This is moronic!!! I've taken my kids to the emergency room and had to wait for two hours, because there were so many illegals in line in front of us. I've known people who have had their social security numbers used by these criminals and had to fight the IRS for 2 or 3 years, to prove that they didn't have the unclaimed income. The nightmare that these people create does include the financial burden that they create, but it goes far further than than that, impeding on the lives of Americans. You lefty's that want to welcome them need to find a way that doesn't impose on my rights, my life, or my wallet.

I'll refrain from trying to hit everything I see wrong with this, and go for the one that tends to undermine your credibility; you pretend that the fact that illegals make up 3% of the US pop has anything to do with whether or not emergency rooms in areas that are have heavy, if not majority, illegal "residents" are being sucked dry. And the answer is somewhat self-evident, not to mention the hopsitals themselves say it's a problem. If you disagree, fine, but that you try and sneak by the claim by implicitely claiming that illegals are uniformly scattered throughout the country screams "liberal." Keep your personal opinions out of journalism.

Robert you are so ignorant when you said that they learned the language, From history books if you have heard of one, the British never learned the language of the Native American Indians. Because if you forgot about them they were here first. They did not learn the language they imposed it. This is a country based on greed, look at history the goal was always to conquer more land, and gain more power. The issues here is not who pays more and who pays less taxes. People are going insane about this issue. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. By Albert Einstein. if you want different results than start doing things different. Obviously the current immigration laws in place have not worked for decades. I agree do not be a hypocrite, because, the first one to stand up to do the hard jobs are NOT the white Americans/Chicanos. Even if they have to eat beans they know how to proudly weak up early and go work in the sun or snow.

Good to know they are a net positive for the feds however they are a negative 20 billion/yr to the California budget alone. Supposedly the Feds are supposed to protect the States I guess the Feds have forgotten about that which is why the States can override the Feds constitutionally, if the States don't do it, than the militia is next in line.

If you think illegals, from wherever, are actually paying their way you are flagrantly uninformed. Health care costs alone for all the medical care they receive for free have shut down many hospitals - I work at a public big city hospital and I help deliver that free care. And legal citizens have to share the available appoinment slots with illegals. I have heard many a complaint from them having to wait months to get in to see a specialist, and I'm not free to tell them what I know of who is getting in ahead of them....Drives me mad.
Check out ALIPAC. The data there will make you liberals turn away, or if you can be honest with yourself, will likely make you rethink your ignorant beliefs. Immigration is OK if controlled and logical, and many of these 'illegals' are nice people. But there are billions of nice people on this earth. When the US hits a billion people like China has, our problems will be magnified hundredfold.

What part of "illegal" don't some of you people understand? This is not a humanitarian issue, except for liberals who prefer emotion over reason. One of the elements that makes our society secure is that we live under the rule of law. If you don't like the law, change it. But until then, it needs to be enforced and illegals should be expelled - especially those caught breaking even more laws once they're here. Of course, that won't happen now that we have a governor who is committed to making CO a sanctuary state.

One more thing, history does repeat itself. The Berlin wall was knocked down for humanitarian reasons. Families were torn apart and went years without seeing each other. This "mural" being constructed on the border, it the same thing. It will come down.

They also rent houses and buy houses if they are forced out that
means more houses that are empty creating city blight and
lowering the value of other houses in the area and also lowering
the total US house market value. I am a American, and
I think all you scum sucking people whom tell me how great their
christian belief is should really come out and say whom you really
pray to- the Devil- for you blame innocent people for what you
scum suckers, wrecking the US economy, has done for the sake of
greed and hate, but that is what your god the devil is all about.

I laugh at how all you can comment and criticize about illegals working here in the US. They are hard working people. When you need a job done right the first time around without paying alot of money for it, they are the first people you hire. Stop being hypocrites about the whole matter. There are alot of Anglo's and African-Americans also using the welfare system. I work in a podiatry clinic during the day. I translate for the doctors when needed. Most of our "illegal" patients pay cash for their appointment and upfront. On the other hand, everyone else gives me hell to pay a simple $20-$40 copayment. I believe that there is bad in all kinds. It doesn't matter where you're from including drunk drivers, rapists, ect... In order to obtain a "Visa" in Mexico, you have to prove that you have enough money to sustain yourself in the United States. They are coming over to work. If they had that kind of money, I am quite sure they wouldn't take one step into the US, unless just to visit. Maybe the next article should be about the 5th or 6th generation Anglos and African Americans that recieve welfare benefits vs Illegal Aliens.

Facts 12/02/2010 9:58:00 PM
I AM NOT SAYING DONT CLOSE THE BORDERS. I AM SAYING STOP THE HATE.
Before you Scream and show Ignorance and Hate at least read the Immigration Law regarding Undocumented Immigrants.
THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS ARE PAYING MORE TAXES THAN YOU THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IMMIGRANTS AND TAXES:
Q: “Is it true that illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes and drain our economy?”
A: As Ben Franklin said, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” Like the rest of us, unauthorized immigrants pay taxes on their property and anything they buy. More than half of them have taxes taken out of their paychecks, but because our immigration system is dysfunctional, these taxes are paid under false Social Security numbers. We need a new regimen in which we know who is paying taxes and can ensure that no one is getting a free ride. The only way to do that is to pull unauthorized immigrants out of the shadows and get them on the right side of the law.
Three state-level studies have found that unauthorized immigrants pay more in taxes than they use in benefits. In Iowa, unauthorized immigrants pay an estimated $40 to $62 million in state taxes, while they and their employers contribute an additional $50 million to $77.8 million in federal, Social Security, and Medicare taxes from which they will never benefit. In Oregon, unauthorized immigrants—who are not eligible for any state benefits—pay between $134 million and $187 million in taxes each year. Finally, in Texas, the State Comptroller found that, without unauthorized residents, the gross state product in 2005 would have been $17.7 billion less.
------------------------
The economics of immigration, Stephen C. Goss, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration and someone who enjoys bipartisan support for his straightforwardness, said that by 2007, the Social Security trust fund had received a net benefit of somewhere between $120 billion and $240 billion from unauthorized immigrants.
That represented an astounding 5.4 percent to 10.7 percent of the trust fund's total assets of $2.24 trillion that year. The cumulative contribution is surely higher now. Unauthorized immigrants paid a net contribution of $12 billion in 2007 alone, Goss said.
Previous estimates circulating publicly and in Congress had placed the annual contributions at roughly half of Goss's 2007 figure and listed the cumulative benefit on the order of $50 billion.
The Social Security trust fund faces a solvency crisis that would be even more pressing were it not for these payments.
Adding to the Social Security irony is that the restrictionists are mostly OLDER AND RETIRED WHITES from longtime American families. The very people, in other words, who benefit most from the Social Security payments by unauthorized immigrants.
-------------------------------------
The Undocumented Immigrants pay the exact same amount of taxes like you and me when they buy Things, rent a house, fill up gas, drink a beer or wine, buy appliances, play the states lottery and mega millions . Below are the links to just a few sites that will show you exactly how much tax you or the Undocumented Immigrant pays , so you see they are NOT FREELOADERS, THEY PAY TAXES AND TOLLS Exactly the same as you, Now if you take out 10% from your states /city Budget what will your city/state look like financially ?
Stop your folly thinking , you are wise USE YOUR WISDOM to see the reality. They pay more taxes than you think, Including FEDERAL INCOME TAX using a ITN Number that is given to them by the IRS, Social Security Taxes and State taxes that are withheld form their paychecks automatically.

TAX DATA : http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/245.html
Eight million Undocumented immigrants pay Social Security, Medicare and income taxes. Denying public services to people who pay their taxes is an affront to America’s bedrock belief in fairness. But many “pull-up-the-drawbridge” politicians want to do just that when it comes to Undocumented immigrants.
The fact that Undocumented immigrants pay taxes at all will come as news to many Americans. A stunning two thirds of Undocumented immigrants pay Medicare, Social Security and personal income taxes.
Yet, nativists like Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., have popularized the notion that illegal aliens are a colossal drain on the nation’s hospitals, schools and welfare programs — consuming services that they don’t pay for.
In reality, the 1996 welfare reform bill disqualified Undocumented immigrants from nearly all means tested government programs including food stamps, housing assistance, Medicaid and Medicare-funded hospitalization.
The only services that illegals can still get are emergency medical care and K-12 education. Nevertheless, Tancredo and his ilk pushed a bill through the House criminalizing all aid to illegal aliens — even private acts of charity by priests, nurses and social workers.
Potentially, any soup kitchen that offers so much as a free lunch to an illegal could face up to five years in prison and seizure of assets. The Senate bill that recently collapsed would have tempered these draconian measures against private aid.
But no one — Democrat or Republican — seems to oppose the idea of withholding public services. Earlier this year, Congress passed a law that requires everyone who gets Medicaid — the government-funded health care program for the poor — to offer proof of U.S. citizenship so we can avoid “theft of these benefits by illegal aliens,” as Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., puts it. But, immigrants aren’t flocking to the United States to mooch off the government.
According to a study by the Urban Institute, the 1996 welfare reform effort dramatically reduced the use of welfare by undocumented immigrant households, exactly as intended. And another vital thing happened in 1996: the Internal Revenue Service began issuing identification numbers to enable illegal immigrants who don’t have Social Security numbers to file taxes.
One might have imagined that those fearing deportation or confronting the prospect of paying for their safety net through their own meager wages would take a pass on the IRS’ scheme. Not so. Close to 8 million of the 12 million or so illegal aliens in the country today file personal income taxes using these numbers, contributing billions to federal coffers.
No doubt they hope that this will one day help them acquire legal status — a plaintive expression of their desire to play by the rules and come out of the shadows. What’s more, aliens who are not self-employed have Social Security and Medicare taxes automatically withheld from their paychecks.
Since undocumented workers have only fake numbers, they’ll never be able to collect the benefits these taxes are meant to pay for. Last year, the revenues from these fake numbers — that the Social Security administration stashes in the “earnings suspense file” — added up to 10 percent of the Social Security surplus.
The file is growing, on average, by more than $50 billion a year. Beyond federal taxes, all illegals automatically pay state sales taxes that contribute toward the upkeep of public facilities such as roads that they use, and property taxes through their rent that contribute toward the schooling of their children.
The non-partisan National Research Council found that when the taxes paid by the children of low-skilled immigrant families — most of whom are illegal — are factored in, they contribute on average $80,000 more to federal coffers than they consume. Yes, many illegal migrants impose a strain on border communities on whose doorstep they first arrive, broke and unemployed.
To solve this problem equitably, these communities ought to receive the surplus taxes that federal government collects from immigrants. But the real reason border communities are strained is the lack of a guest worker program.
Such a program would match willing workers with willing employers in advance so that they wouldn’t be stuck for long periods where they disembark while searching for jobs. The cost of undocumented aliens is an issue that immigrant bashers have created to whip up indignation against people they don’t want here in the first place.
With the Senate having just returned from yet another vacation and promising to revisit the stalled immigration bill, politicians ought to set the record straight: Illegals are not milking the government. If anything, it is the other way around.

They're perfectly innocent and no drain on society. We should open up the borders to the entire planet...oh yeah we already do.
Did this "study" even mention eduction, school lunches, fire, police, prison, legal services etc.????????
that's what I thought!

Robert 12/02/2010 8:34:00 AM
This country might and was founded on Imigration, but at least they learned the language,so the ones here now should do the sameand they should be applying for citizenship as well, but if they got the money to pay the "cyotes" to sneek them across the Arizona borders and California borders, not to even mention Texas and New Mexico, then they have the money to come here the right way by filling for visa and such, if they don't like it and any one who is here leagally don't like it then they need to get out and take their sympathisers with them.
-
Lo Sconosciuto 12/01/2010 11:08:00 PM
If they're here illegally, who do you count them in the first place? Or track their finances?
I can't believe that illegal aliens pay in more than they take out, except MAYBE in direct payouts. But for services and infrastructure, there's no doubt they use more than pay for, from schools to hospitals to even jails.
"Unauthorized" illegals are indeed banned from these entitlement programs, but as it says right in the article, they're using fake ID papers to tap in to the programs anyway.
And the payoff quote from the Brookings Institute says immigrants, not "illegal" immigrants, so stop trying to muddle the issue.
-
Druid 12/01/2010 9:48:00 PM
Nonsense - just go into any hospital emergency room, and you'll see plenty of illegals getting free healthcare. The average ER visit costs between $1200 and $1500 - that's a lot of "dole." This article spews more pap from liberals who dominate the academic community.
The bottom line is simply that they have broken the law - they are criminals, pure and simple from the day they arrive. How many drunk driving illegals will continue to kill our friends and family members? Why aren't they deported immediately?
