Lights, Camera, Animals

Zoo Lights enters its twentieth year tonight, and this edition offers plenty of reasons to make the trip. In addition to the more than 150 animated light sculptures over 38 acres, there will be breakfast and dessert buffets with Santa, live ice sculpting and fire dancing, a Kwanzaa celebration and a Zoo Year’s Eve countdown.

To celebrate the anniversary, the zoo has prepared a special packet to give the 20,000th visitor to Zoo Lights this year. It will include a year’s membership, an encounter with an animal, and various zoo paraphernalia. But don’t wait, thinking it will take a while to hit 20,000. “Normally, we would reach our 20,000th visitor before opening weekend ends,” says communications director Tiffany Barnhart. Zoo Lights averages 135,000 total visitors annually.

The Denver Zoo is at 2300 Steele Street; Zoo Lights runs nightly from 5 to 9 p.m. through January 2. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for kids (two and under get in free) and $6 for seniors. For more information, call 303-376-4800 or visit www.denverzoo.org.
