Viva La Revolución!

Revolution and art have always gone hand in hand, from the Bolshevik-era propaganda of the Soviets to the freak-out frescoes of the psychedelic ’60s. That’s why, for Zach Alexander, the best way to bring a bunch of disparate social-change groups together is under one big artistic umbrella.

“The thing we noticed is that all these groups aren’t really working together, and we wanted to do something about that,” Alexander explains. “We decided that art is a really great unifying movement for a lot of these things.”

Thus was born Intifada, the art party and exhibition of which Alexander is curator; it unites groups such as Food Not Bombs and Veterans for Peace, among others. The theme, of course, is revolution, and artworks from both professional artists and the revolutionaries themselves will be on display — but the real focus, says Alexander, is the party: “We want it to be a celebration of all those who are really getting their hands dirty.”

The party is free for everyone, but a $10 donation is suggested; all proceeds benefit G.R.A.S.P.’s (Gang Rescue and Support Project) Barrio Unity Mural Project, which gets at-risk youth painting community murals. “The goal is to pay for all their murals in 2011,” says Alexander. The party starts tonight at 8 p.m. at the Artwork Network, 878 Santa Fe Drive. For more information, go to www.myintifada.com.
