Kush Pushin’

KushCon II will turn the Colorado Convention Center into the largest head shop in the country this weekend, with more than 340,000 square feet of bongs, grow-light setups and girls in bikinis hawking dispensary fliers. The only thing missing will be actual kush.

This is the second Kush Convention in Denver this year; the first one drew nearly 19,000 people over Easter weekend. This week-end’s three-day show will be nearly twice the size, and event producer Michael Lerner hopes to draw twice the crowd. “This year, the show is running over three-quarters of a million dollars,” he says. “I held nothing back.”

Additions include a glass-blowing area where people can get custom pieces, and a free raffle for more than $150,000 in grow supplies, including a complete setup built into a truck trailer. The event will also feature more entertainment than last time, when Cypress Hill was the biggest draw — and the ganja-friendly members of that act were only around to sign autographs. Bands including the Flo-bots, the Dirty Heads and War are scheduled to close out the convention each night with actual shows.

KushCon II opens today at 4 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th Street; it will be open until midnight tonight, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20 at the door, or buy them online at www.kushcon.com.
Fri., Dec. 17, 4 p.m.-midnight; Sat., Dec. 18, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 19, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 2010
