A Merry, Gory Christmas

Nothing reeks of holiday spirit like obscene phone calls, home intrusion and a couple of dead sorority girls. Luckily, Black Christmas — the 1974 precursor to the slasher-film genre — fills all such festive requirements. As part of the Denver FilmCenter’s Watching Hour series, the Bob Clark classic (Clark is also the man behind the not-gory A Christmas Story) brings the holiday spirit down a dozen dark notches with the tale of a sorority house terrorized by a madman — and the devastatingly bloody results.

FilmCenter programming director Keith Garcia is happy to be showing Black Christmas on the eve of the holiday — an honor not afforded the original release. “Other than being the most terrifying film ever made,” Garcia says, half joking, “Black Christmas just fits the mood of the holiday season.” Prior to the showing, the theater will host a party in the lobby, complete with cookie decorating, to get the holiday spirit up before the torture begins. Black Christmas will screen tonight at 10 p.m. and tomorrow at midnight at the FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue. Tickets run $7 to $9.75 and are available at the box office or through www.denverfilm.org. For more information, visit the website or call 303-595-3456.
