“Even in this age of DVD screeners, many members of the Academy still prefer to see films on a big screen and with an audience,” says Aspen Film artistic director Laura Thielen. “Many members of the Academy own property or vacation in Aspen, and it’s become an annual holiday tradition up here to screen some of the year’s best films for both the Academy members and the general public. They’ll go skiing or boarding or shopping all day, then spend the evening at the movies.

“For many of these films, the only place to see them in time for Oscar Award qualification is in Los Angeles, New York or Aspen,” she adds.

Event sponsor and Aspen Western-wear specialists Kemo Sabe will be on hand tonight to help celebrate the remake of the 1969 John Wayne classic; the movie will be shown at the Wheeler Opera House, 320 East Hyman Avenue, at 8:15 p.m.

The remainder of the films will be screened at Harris Concert Hall, 960 North Third Street; general admission tickets for each are $13. For tickets and information, including a full schedule, visit www.aspenfilm.org.
