Photography, an alchemist’s medium dependent on a manipulation of light and time, unfairly stands in that no-man’s-land between fine art and technical craft, and working to change that general perception is half the job of promoting the photographic arts.

That said, the tenth anniversary of Working With Artists, a nonprofit gallery, studio and workshop dedicated solely to supporting folks working in the photographic medium, is no small business. Tucked away on the backside of Belmar at 445 South Saulsbury Street, WWA is going strong, offering a wide range of photography classes for all ages and skill levels, renting out studio space and producing a full schedule of gallery shows.

Of WWA’s longevity, associate director Valerie Photogoddess jokes, “It’s a miracle of God in this economy!” But she then turns serious to acknowledge that the organization “can only go up from here,” with a new director, Linda Sheridan, at the helm and a solid standing in the photographic arts community.

In honor of its well-deserved success, WWA will host Cocktails, Cake and Cameras, a photography-centric gala at which attendees can pose inside a photo costume booth or a primitive camera obscura and take part in a community art project while snacking and shmoozing. The partying, which also includes random hooping demonstrations, fire dancers and a fundraising silent auction, takes place in WWA’s FLASH Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m., and cameras are fully encouraged; admission is $45 ($75 for couples), or $75 ($135 couple) for VIP tickets.
