Faces in the Crowd

The Sellars Project Space has built a reputation for featuring some of Denver’s most interesting artists, and Brian Comber: New Works continues that tradition. Comber, who has exhibited in town since the 1980s, is known as both a painter and a printmaker. For this show, he’s created a body of vaguely surrealistic portraits that, to some extent, look like a cross between Grant Wood’s work and that of kitsch queen Margaret “Big Eyes” Keene.

“Brian is currently involved in portraiture on large canvases,” explains gallery director Jimmy Sellars. “At first the pieces were of imagined human figures, with an ethereal, dream-like quality, but as the series evolved, he started using people who were close to him as the models, so he pulled toward reality. And he stays spontaneous with the paint, using larger-than-expected brushes and broad strokes, which blend the different colors into a singular effect.”

Though the show has been up for a couple of weeks, the reception for the artist is tonight, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Sellars Project Space, 4383 Tennyson Street. Comber will be on hand, and back at the gallery at noon tomorrow for “Talk Talk Talk,” a discussion of his art. To find out more, call 720-475-1182 or go to www.sellarsprojectspace.com.
