Trees pushes a lot of air when it gets on stage with its bank of nearly wall-to-wall amps issuing forth colossal, crushing, menacing, loping sounds that recall Neurosis circa The Eye of Every Storm without that band's essential weirdness, or Wolves in the Throne Room minus the more ridiculous black-metal affectations. Trees (due Friday, January 21, at the Larimer Lounge) doesn't follow the stoner-rock path as normally dictated by this sort of music, and the trio's soaring guitar melodies elevate what could be pure heaviness into something far more dynamic. Live, these guys throw themselves into their performances, making the melodramatic tone of their songs believable.
