Story Time

If you’re looking for a window into another culture, a good place to start is with its folk tales and children’s stories — after all, the yarns that we weave for our children carry the essential cultural data that we want to pass on. To that end, it’s hard to imagine a more convenient cultural jumping-off point than Cuéntame un Cuentito (Tell Me a Story), a joint venture of Modern Muse Theatre Company and Stories on Stage.

Like all Stories on Stage productions, this one calls for actors (for this performance, they’re all from Modern Muse) to read stories on stage. In this case, though, the stories are bilingual — some in English, some in Spanish — and they come from Hispanic folk traditions. Probably the most recognizable is Prietita y la Llorona (Prietita and the Weeping Woman), by Gloria E. Anzaldúa, based on the fantastic Mexican ghost story about a woman who is denied entrance to heaven after drowning her children and killing herself, and is doomed to wander the earth for all eternity looking for them.

The performance leans toward the educational — it’s primarily for kids — but if that synopsis of La Llorona is any indication, it should be pretty interesting for parents and adults, too. The stories start at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 29, at Su Teatro at the Denver Civic Theater, 721 Santa Fe Drive, and tickets are $3 for children, $5 for adults.
