Red Bastard is a self-described monster of cartoonish proportions, dressed in red spandex. Still, Eric Davis, who created and performs the character, has a piece of advice for people going into the show: Dont be scared. You would be forgiven for being a bit scared, however: Red Bastard is famously deviant, engaging the audience in boundary-pushing and occasionally uncomfortable ways. I feel like theres a triangle of my work, says Davis. The three points of it are the whore, the fascist and the anarchist.
Davis is about to join Cirque du Soleil as the clown in the L.A. production of ISIS. His two shows here in Boulder will be among the last he performs as Red Bastard for now and possibly forever. There are two shows one tonight and one tomorrow night, both at 8 p.m. and both at the Performing Arts Center at Naropa University, 2130 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder. Tickets are $13 to $15 and are likely to sell out. Davis will also teach a five-hour workshop on Sunday titled Bouffon: The Anti-Clown. For more information, visit www.redbastard.com.
