The Denver Zine Librarys Super Bowl Chili Cookoff started as an alternative to the years most popular football game. But over the years, explains Kelly Shortandqueer, whos been part of the event since its inception in 2006, it has actually attracted people who were look-ing for something else to do and people who were interested in the game.

Thanks to an earlier 1 p.m. start time, the friendly competition, decided by a silent vote over the course of the afternoon, has also grown from just two or three cooks to nearly ten. But that hasnt stopped the same zine librarian from being crowned Chili Champion the past several years. Every year were looking for someone to come and beat him, says Shortandqueer. We always know were going to have some amazing chili there no matter what, but were excited to have some new competition.
Its a pretty low-key day, he continues. Well have couches and chairs and some music so that people can just come and hang out and chat with Denver zine lovers.
