Zines and Beans

The Denver Zine Library’s Super Bowl Chili Cookoff started as an alternative to the year’s most popular football game. But over the years, explains Kelly Shortandqueer, who’s been part of the event since its inception in 2006, “it has actually attracted people who were look-ing for something else to do and people who were interested in the game.”

Thanks to an earlier — 1 p.m. — start time, the friendly competition, decided by a silent vote over the course of the afternoon, has also grown from just two or three cooks to nearly ten. But that hasn’t stopped the same zine librarian from being crowned Chili Champion the past several years. “Every year we’re looking for someone to come and beat him,” says Shortandqueer. “We always know we’re going to have some amazing chili there no matter what, but we’re excited to have some new competition.

“It’s a pretty low-key day,” he continues. “We’ll have couches and chairs and some music so that people can just come and hang out and chat with Denver zine lovers.”

The Zine Library and 27 Social Centre is located at 2727 West 27th Avenue. Interested cooks should e-mail denverzinel-brary@gmail.com to get on the list. The hungry pay just $3 to $5 (sliding scale) for bottomless grub. Get more information at www.denverzinelibrary.org.
