Spend your Fridays down in the Basement

After a seven-year run at 2401 Blake Street, last June the Blake Street Tavern moved a block south to the former Club 303/Polly Esther's space at 2301 Blake. The new space was massive, and owner Chris Fuselier hinted at the time that he might open a dance club in the basement of the 18,000-square-foot venue. That club finally opened with a New Year's Eve blowout. Dubbed The Basement, it sports a big, lighted dance floor, and on Fridays, DJ Craig spins mostly '80s-centric music — in honor of Polly Esther's — with some tunes from the '70s and '90s thrown in.

For now, the club is only open on Fridays, but Shelly Majeres, the bar's general manager, says Saturdays should be added to the mix after April. And in the meantime, the 350-person-capacity club can be rented out for private events and parties.

Club Scout: Francois Safieddine, who took over the former Ruth's Chris Steak House space at 1445 Market in November, is calling the new club going in there Chloe; according to Paulina Szafranski, vice president of marketing for Lotus Concepts, Chloe is slated to open in May, with a tavern and cabaret liquor-license hearing set for February 10. In other Lotus news, although the University of Colorado Denver will open its new business school next year in the same building at 1475 Lawrence Street where 5 Degrees is located, that shouldn't affect the club; Szafranski says Lotus just renewed its lease on the space for five years.

The next incarnation of Brewski's Pub & Grill should open Friday, February 4, at 2100 East 104th Avenue in Northglenn. Chuck Persichetti, who ran the old Brewski's at Highway 36 and Pecos Street for a decade, as well as several other spots during his 45-year run in the bar business, says the new spot will be an updated version of the old Brewski's (which is now the biker-friendly country bar Buckin' Harley's). He's planning to bring in live local music Wednesdays through Saturdays.

On Saturday, February 5, Interstate Kitchen & Bar (901 West Tenth Avenue) will start its weekly slot-car races. A maximum of forty racers will be accepted each week to race on the 1/32-scale track; racers will be divided into four-person heats. (Each heat is made up of four two-minute races preceded by a thirty-second practice period.) The winner at the end of the night will get a $15 gift certificate; championships will be held quarterly. The races will start at 10:30 p.m., when specials — for racers and spectators alike — include $2 beers, $4 whiskey shots and $5 combos.
