A Non-Mean Queen

In his role as Edie, the world’s sexiest drag queen, Christopher Kenney is many things -- silly, campy and disconcertingly good-looking would be a few descriptors – but there is one thing he is not: mean. “Sometimes people think of drag queens as being bitchy, but it’s not bitchy at all,” Kenney says. “It’s not mean or cunty. It’s a very lighthearted show.”

A jazz and tap dancer from age eight and a longtime ballet dancer for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Chicago and the Pennsylvania Ballet, Kenney fell into his signature role as Edie by accident, when he dressed in drag for Halloween and got randomly offered a job. The money was right, so he took it, and it’s taken him to some pretty incredible places: These days, he has a starring role in Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity at New York New York in Las Vegas. “It’s quite an honor to do Cirque du Soleil,” Kenney says.

Tonight, though, he’s bringing his high-kicking, storytelling, song-and-dance act to Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe Street. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $15; for more information, call 303-293-0075 or visit www.lannies.com.
