Whoever dreamed that we’d need to keep up with trends in gardening when for decades — nay, centuries — we thought all we had to do was dig a hole in the ground, drop in some seeds and care for the seedlings? Garden Media Group trend-spotter Suzi McCoy did, and she looks at home gardening with brave new eyes and a more pointed sense of planning.

Her forward-thinking aesthetic — Gardening With a Purpose — will be the subject of the year’s first Bonfils-Stanton lecture at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

"She’ll look at how people are thinking of the garden more as a productive space that is going to benefit the environment and contribute to the greater good, rather than just providing a pretty backdrop for a living room window,” says DBG adult programs manager Celia Adamek. “Her firm puts out a list every year of garden trends, reporting what’s in and what’s out for gardening. She’ll be recasting that kind of information for lay people and home gardeners.”

McCoy, who is in town for the gardening industry ProGreen EXPO, will share her ideas on the move toward sustainable urban food growing and gardening techniques and more today at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall at the DBG, 1007 York Street; admission is $20 ($15 for DBG members), and pre-registration is recommended.
