True Love

In 2009, photographer Lucia De Giovanni decided to find out what love looked like. So she set about gathering a collection of candid images of couples — from her own parents to local musicians and their significant others — in every stage of love.

To keep her subjects from posing or becoming self-conscious, De Giovanni asked them to sit in front of the camera for no more than five minutes. “What we see in the movies and in the media is so romanticized and stylized and kind of unreal,” De Giovanni says about love. The result is her first published book, The Love Project, an eighty-page labor of love that will be unveiled tonight with a celebration and an exhibit. The Love Project Show will include performances of love songs by Mane Rok, John Common, Rob Drabkin and other musicians, some of whom are friends of De Giovanni’s and subjects in the book. (De Giovanni has long been involved with the local music scene as an experienced live concert photographer.) All of the photos from the book will also be displayed.

The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Flobots Community Space, 2705 Larimer Street, and is free and open to the public. For more information, go to www.luciadegiovanni.com.
