Blow your mind at Mind Benders

Salmineo Martin — or Big Sal, as he's known in the professional wrestling community — built a strong reputation with Juggalo Championship Wrestling and Primo's Hardcore Wrestling; he even went on tour with the Insane Clown Posse. But while he still spends time in the ring, he's now grappling with a new challenge: finishing the renovation of the former Brickhouse nightclub (9262 West 58th Avenue in Arvada) that he hopes to reopen as Mind Benders in the next week or two.

Mind Benders should be a real trip.

In keeping with its name, the venue's decor will be a bit of a trip. Almost everything in Mind Benders will be black-light-reflective, from the carpet to the airbrushed murals to the pool tables. Even the waitresses will sport neon fishnets, so their legs will glow while they're walking around. "Not many people do the black theme like we're doing," Martin says. And he's talking about the whole metro area; there aren't any dance clubs at all in this part of Arvada.

On Fridays and Saturdays, Mind Benders will host shot roulette, with club-goers getting different-colored neon shot glasses as they come in the door. Every hour and a half or two hours, a wheel will be spun, and if it lands on your color, you'll get a free shot. Martin plans to bring in live bands — all kinds of genres except rap — on the weekends and have DJs during the week; he's hiring go-go dancers who will dance on the stage as well as with customers. And once the club is really up and running, Martin hopes to hold a three-day festival with 24 bands.

But he'll also put in time behind the bar, where he'll show off his bartending skills by flipping bottles and doing fire tricks. And he might even get some of his wrestler buddies to do security.

Club scout: Although it opened (after many delays) in November, Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill (8620 Northfield Boulevard), a 22,000-square-foot behemoth named after Toby Keith's hit single "I Love This Bar," will finally celebrate its grand opening on Tuesday, February 22; word has it that the country superstar himself will be there. Although the party isn't open to the general public, sixty to eighty fans will get to meet Keith. The event will also kick off a week-long series of concerts at the venue, Keith's ninth and largest restaurant.
