Singers and Saints

The unexpected confluence of two seemingly unrelated ideas has always been the theme of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s Mixed Taste lecture series, where the MCA brings in a pair of experts to tag-team-discuss two disparate topics. But in its new Mixed Taste on Ice winter series, says programming director Sarah Baie, there’s another intriguing element at play: mystery. “Most of these lectures are heavily curated,” she explains, meaning that Baie herself normally chooses the topics and then tracks down the speakers. For this winter series, though, the process works in reverse: “This is a sort of all-star series of speakers who have spoken here before, in this case choosing their own topics” — meaning not even the MCA is sure what secrets the lectures might hold.

Tonight’s lineup features Nancy Wadsworth, a political science professor at the University of Denver, on the country singer Tammy Wynette, paired with Kirk Ambrose, an art history professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, on “cross-dressing saints” — a topic Baie declines to elaborate on, in order to preserve the intrigue. Mixed Taste starts tonight at 6 p.m. and runs every Friday night until March 18 at the MCA, 1485 Delgany Street; tickets are $15 to $20. For more information, call 303-298-7554 or visit www.mcadenver.org.
