Portraits of the Artist

Andy Warhol was more than just another modern master; some believe he can actually be credited with starting the current era in contemporary art. He did this in myriad ways, not only by turning soup cans into icons of veneration, but by delving into film, installation and performance art.

An interesting facet of Warhol in Colorado, the current show at the University of Denver’s Victoria H. Myhren Gallery, is that the exhibit puts photos taken by Warhol together with those of Warhol that were done by three local photographers: John Bonath, Valere Harris Shane and Mark Sink. The portraits were taken when Warhol came to Colorado in the ’80s — hence the show’s title. And tonight at 6:30 p.m., the three photographers will join art historian Elliot King on a panel at the gallery titled “Photographing Warhol.”

“The panel is about cutting through to the time of Warhol,” says Rupert Jenkins, who curated the show with Myhren director Dan Jacobs. “The local photographers did not set up formal shoots, but photographed Warhol candidly. I expect it to be an evening of storytelling.”

Admission is free. The Myhren is at 2121 East Asbury Avenue, on the DU campus; for more information, go to www.du.edu/art/myhrengallery or all 303-871-3716.
