Show Us Your Long Johns!

If you love Mardi Gras but are heading for the high country rather than the low country this year, check out CarniVail, which kicks off at noon today with a Louisiana-style crawfish boil in the Eagle’s Nest at the top of Vail’s Eagle Bahn gondola.

“It’s the world’s highest low-country crawfish boil,” boasts Vail Resorts spokeswoman Kate Lessman. The resort will also feature Fat Tuesday festivities on March 8, including the annual Joie de Vail parade at 3 p.m., followed by a free Frogs Gone Fishin’ concert. “CarniVail is a little bit of everything you love about New Orleans combined with spring break in the mountains,” Lessman says. “The Fat Tuesday parade is on Bridge Street in the Village, and it really does have that French Quarter feel mixed with our tight-knit mountain-community vibe. It’s all about letting loose, great snow and drinking beers under the sun. What more could you ask for?”

Maybe a free Buckwheat Zydeco concert? Vail will offer that, too, at 6 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Solaris Plaza in Vail Village. To register a float for the Fat Tuesday parade (the grand prize is $1,000 cash) visit www.vail.com/carnivail; for more information, call 970-476-6797.
