Through Death, Life
Andrea Moore’s Good Grief may be the culmination of her six-week residency at PlatteForum, but it’s been a lot longer than that in the making.
“The death of my father is the underlying theme that goes through the whole piece,” she explains of the work she’s done. “It’s been a five-year process from when he told me he was dying up until today.” The result is a multi-faceted installation that builds upon the story (in poetry form) of scattering her father’s ashes — “a long, drawn-out deal that involves three continents” — and incorporates both the observations and emotions that Moore collected along the way. Also included are portraits of Ugandan AIDS orphans and the cultural approaches to grief she learned from them; father-daughter photos from the 77 weddings she’s shot since her father’s death; an 8x10 “grief graph” that “quantified my pain,” Moore says, and many other facets of her grieving.
At the presentation of Good Grief tonight and tomorrow night, Moore will be accompanied by kids from the Joan Farley Academy with whom she worked during her residency; they’ll offer their own poems at 6:30 p.m., with Moore taking the stage at 7.
