Woman of Mystery

The Denver Public Library’s Fresh City Life programming has been going off without a Hitch — until now. The current film series focuses on the rarely seen movies of Alfred Hitchcock; tonight’s screening of Marnie is the last in a lineup that’s included The Wrong Man, Foreign Correspondent and Life Boat.

Film critic Walter Chaw has helped put on more than twenty series at the DPL; he works with Fresh City Life on about half a dozen each year, and thinks this batch of films stands up to the more well-known Hitchcock masterpieces while providing valuable context for fans of the director. “All of his perversities, all of his strangeness with gender and sexuality and marriage — all of those things are on display in Marnie in full bloom,” says Chaw. “It’s just one of those masterpieces a lot of people don’t want to see because it’s extremely uncomfortable. But wonderful.”

The screening starts at 6 p.m. at the Central branch of the Denver Public Library, 10 West Fourteenth Avenue, in the Level B2 Conference Center. Admission is free; for more information, go to www.denverlibrary.org.
Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m. Starts: Feb. 22. Continues through March 8, 2011
