Beauty and Beasts

Given their notorious single-mindedness, zombies are not the most likely subject for a fashion show. Zombies don’t care about fashion; they’re just trying to get some delicious brains. But to Summer Jackson, organizer of the third annual March Of The Zombies Fashion Show, that’s the very thing that makes them ideal. “When the zombies come,” she says, “it just interrupts any part of life. So when I try to capture zombie fashion on the runway, I can merge anything into that zombie theme — whether you’re a cheerleader or a nurse, you’re sort of frozen in time when the zombie attacks happen.”

To that end, Jackson brings in makeup artists to give the models a little decomposition chic “with gore and guts and sometimes bugs,” though she notes that the threads they’re rocking — all by local designers — will work for the living and the undead alike (and they’re all available for purchase). Besides the styles, the show also features zombie-themed art (two artists will be painting live), tattooing, at least one author (Brian Kaufmann signing copies of his book Dead beyond the Fence), DJs and a headlining performance by Lola Black, whose sultry pop-thrash is what zombies would listen to if they cared about music or anything besides brains.

It starts tonight at 9 p.m. at Bender’s Tavern, 314 East 13th Avenue; tickets are $8 (or $5 if you buy in advance) and the event is for ages 21-and-up. For more information, go to www.fashionzombies.webs.com.
