Shave and a Haircut

The idea behind the annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser –- which got its start over a decade ago in a New York City bar on St. Patrick's Day –- is simple: Get a bunch of people together for a head-shaving party and collect donations for childhood cancer research. From that modest start, the concept has now spread worldwide, and today, Fadó Irish Pub (1735 19th Street) will be one of 800 sites participating in the go-bald-for-charity party. “Everyone has been affected by cancer at some point in their family’s life,” say the Denver edition’s organizer, Dara Johnson, a volunteer who came across the St. Baldrick’s Foundation by chance a few years ago and decided to help.

Several teams of shavees are already signed up for this year’s event, but drop-ins are welcome to join in the day of buzz-cutting, which begins at noon. “We’ve had everyone from kids to eighty-year-old grandmas come and get their heads shaved,” says Johnson, who notes that although the event is held at a bar, it's open to all ages. Fadó will also donate 10 percent of the day's food sales to the Denver branch of the organization; the goal is to raise $200,000. For more information, call 303-332-6242 or go to www.stbaldricks.org.
