Myrical Child

More Than a Mixtape
Jewell Tyme

Although the title of Myrical Child's effort More Than a Mixtape implies otherwise, a concentrated listen to the DJ Dozen mixed effort reveals that the youngest Jewell Tyme affiliate and "Box Boy" has ironically churned out just that — a typical mixtape. If these tracks indicate what's in store from his debut album, we're in for a treat of heavy southern-fried beats, big horns and two-bar stuttered rapping. For Myrical Child, this tends to work. He flips his cadence using metaphors of himself as young, hungry talent, asserting that he'll eat the competition: "You lames look good/Dinner plate." Simple, but effective. With several features on the album — the most compelling of which are the Rockie- and Mr. Midas-assisted "It's a Party" — Myrical Child gives a vocally diverse performance which stands strong over the laid-back party beat.
