Climb Every Mountain

The Colorado Mountain Club, which was founded in 1912, is heading into its centennial year with a major push to recruit new members. "We're the club to be a part of for anyone in Colorado who wants to experience new adventures, meet new people and learn some new skills," says CMC spokeswoman Lisa Flynn. The ninth annual Mountain Fest open house, which starts at 1 p.m. today at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street in Golden, will feature an expo illustrating some of those adventures, including classes and travel opportunities around the world. There will also be an indoor rock-climbing challenge, as well as such family-friendly clinics as Climbing the Fourteeners, Preventing Rock Climbing Injuries, Nutrition for Mountaineers, Wildflower Identification, Mountain Weather, Introduction to Fly Fishing, High-Altitude Mountaineering and Avalanche Awareness. And after all that, you can join the club at a happy-hour reception sponsored by the Golden City Brewery.

"Our club is extremely versatile, with a niche for anybody who is active in outdoor sports or wants to be," promises Flynn, who recommends registering online for the free event (space is limited) at www.cmc.org/mountainfest. "Come out and play!"
