The Final Frontier

When Documentary and Discussions Night first took off at Kinda Collective almost three years ago, the interactive evenings quickly “developed a crew of people who came to every one and really enjoyed it so much,” remembers Richard Burgess, a Kinda boardmember. Their popularity was partly due to compelling themes related to energy, monetary systems and even Bob Dylan, and partly thanks to “organic discussion” and “conversations that took a lot of different directions,” he explains. But when the original organizer moved to Montana, Documentary and Discussions Night was headed toward extinction.

But now, like the buffalo, they’re back. Since early January, the programs -- including tonight’s viewing of Frontline’s Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier -- have focused on Kinda’s collaboration with the Digital Garden, Leo Kacenjar’s master's thesis that’s half community garden, half digital-discourse installation. “We’re a small organization,” says Burgess, “so one of the things we’re doing is trying to incorporate all of our projects and events and interrelate them.”

Discussion Nights begin at 6:30 p.m. at the nonprofit’s headquarters, 4500 Leetsdale Drive in Glendale, with “kind of a potluck thing,” Burgess says, as well as some mingling; a discussion follows the film. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Find out more at www.kindacollective.org or by calling 720-255-2575.
