In recent years, Sic Alps has been tapped as an opening act on tours with Yo La Tengo, Pavement and Sonic Youth. But chances are if you saw these guys in Denver, it was up close and personal at a DIY space. The group's ramshackle, lo-fi sound is akin to that of fellow Siltbreeze alumni Eat Skull and Psychedelic Horseshit. That is to say, the music would be easy to mistake for garage rock if not for the band's clear disregard for convention and artificial restrictions in its songwriting. The recently released Napa Asylum sounds like it could have been recorded using a time machine gone back to Spahn Ranch before Manson hatched his plan to bring about Helter Skelter. But rather than being latently dangerous in a physical sense, this San Francisco band is hauntingly engaging.
