“Sometimes,” observes Sara Horle, “the people who you trust the most are trying to kill you.” That’s her short synopsis of Mr. Spacky…The Man Who Was Continuously Followed by Wolves, the inaugural effort (produced by Horle) of the Catamounts, a Boulder-based performance group founded by Amanda Berg-Wilson, freshly back in town after a ten-year stint starting and running the Striding Lion ensemble in Chicago.

Here’s the longer synopsis: Set in the Victorian (read: steampunk) era, the play follows the tribulations of Elizabeth, who has gone to the country to marry a man named George — except that George doesn’t actually exist, and her correspondence is a ruse on the part of Mr. Spacky to lure her in and murder her. Does she die? That, evidently, is up to you. “There are two endings that the audience gets to choose from,” says Horle. “You can choose the super-disgustingly happy ending, or you can choose the horrible, dastardly ending.”

We don’t know about you, but we’re probably going with “dastardly.” Decide when the play opens at 8 p.m tonight at Wesley Chapel, 1290 Folsom Street in Boulder. Opening-night tickets are $25 and include a reception with playwright Emily Schwartz, beer and hors d’oeuvre; the show runs through April 9, with tickets ranging from $12 to $15 for those performances.
