The Paper Fashion Show’s beginnings were humble. “It was simple designs, simple dresses,” admits Delana Reilly, event co-chair. But while wearable clothing made from paper sounds inherently humble, over six years the fashion on display has grown far more elaborate. “It’s so ornate, with such detail,” Reilly says. “People do papier mâché; last year, our audience favorite was on stilts, with paper developed in the actual stilts. It just gets more and more intricate, more and more difficult to judge. There’s just more and more talent.”

The show, presented by the Art Directors Club Denver with proceeds benefiting Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, is unlike any other fashion event in the country, even if it follows a familiar format. “It’s very similar to a traditional fashion show in that we have runway models and they’re going to be showing off their designs — dresses, costumes, bikinis, even suits for male models,” Reilly explains. “It’s very untraditional in that only 10 percent of the designs are not paper.”

Sixty teams (up from 42 last year), including many made up of students, have entered the seventh annual Paper Fashion Show; they’re competing for prizes and paper trophies. For the audience, there will be appetizers, a full cash bar, a silent auction for the de-signs — and the show itself. Social hour starts at 6 p.m. tonight, with the show at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1144 Broadway. For more information, or to buy tickets, go to www.paperfashionshow.com.
