Denver’s Got Style!

When it comes to this summer’s Denver County Fair debut, Dana Cain has no doubts, but, she admits, this weekend’s inaugural Denver Style Expo, a brand-new event with a fashion-forward vision for the Denver scene, still feels like a giant step into the great unknown. But it sounds like a winner: The expo, which begins tonight at 6 p.m. at the Denver Merchandise Mart with a gala opening, includes a presentation by Shear Genius star Charlie Price and the prestigious Denver Style Awards, hosted by Babblin’ Brooks and local RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Nina Flowers.

The event continues tomorrow with vendor shopping, workshops and more from noon to 9 p.m.; a nonstop pageant of runway shows will present bridal styles and vintage couture fashions segueing into Japanese pop styles as the day progresses. “We’ll have clothes for fat people, clothes for little kids. It’s not all tall, skinny-sized, expressionless stuff,” Cain promises. “Some of it will actually be based in reality.”

The expo culminates on Saturday with people’s-choice best-dressed audience awards and the Denver Top 10 Fashion Show, featuring a Mondo Guerra finale showcasing his latest collection. (Be there: Mondo hasn’t shown a collection in Denver since 2003.) “Fashion and style can be really fun — it’s really a sister industry to the arts,” Cain notes. “It’s a lot like art that you hang on your body instead of the wall.” Admission to the expo is $10 daily or $15 for both days (and free for children under twelve); the Denver Merchandise Mart is at 451 East 58th Avenue.
