Doing Donuts

When Superior Donuts director Bruce Sevy, associate arts director at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, first saw the play at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, he wondered if it was too particular to the Windy City to translate. It is, after all, heavily steeped in one of the last doughnut shops in Uptown, the last of the neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side to gentrify — and that gives it a pretty Chicago-ish vibe. Then again, it’s not as if the polarizing forces of gentrification are unique to Chicago.

“You know, I’ve been here in Denver since 1982, and you have these neighborhoods that can seem like they’re kind of frozen in time, but then they can really change,” Sevy muses. “Like South Broadway. When I got here, South Broadway looked completely different, had a totally different vibe.” The vibe change, he says, is the important part; the story of Arthur Przybyszewski, his run-down, family-owned doughnut shop and the relationship he develops with the African-American assistant he hires, who’s got big plans to update the place for a newer, younger demographic, could take place anywhere. Maybe even on South Broadway.

Superior Donuts opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Space Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, and continues its run through May 7. For tickets ($10 and up), showtimes or more information, visit www.denvercenter.org or call 303-893-9582.
Fridays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 1:30 & 7:30 p.m.; Mondays-Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. Starts: April 1. Continues through May 7, 2011
