At the 24-year-old Cannabis Cup festival in Amsterdam, “things are a little more wide open,” explains High Times executive editor Dan Skye. “A kid from B.C. once brought his pot in by crotching it, and he took second place. People do all sorts of things to get their strains in the competition.”

By contrast, the Medical Cannabis Cup, born last summer in San Francisco and new to Denver this weekend, “is a very locked-down process,” Skye says, one that is restricted to legally operating, licensed dispensaries. “We are being led by some very revered Colorado attorneys who are guiding us through everything,” he acknowledges.

The two-day Cup features cultivation seminars with High Times editors Danny Danko and Nico Escondido, expos with industry leaders, a concert by Kid Cudi and, of course, a competition (judged by independent experts) to crown the best indicas, sativas, hash and edibles in Colorado. It’s open to all adults eighteen and older, though only cardholders will be permitted to consume cannabis on the premises.

“We’re long past waving this as a banner of the counterculture,” Skye says. “This is big business now. We want to see the harnesses taken off.”

General admission is $50; a VIP two-day pass includes entrance to tonight’s Kid Cudi concert and is $100. All daytime activities take place at the Exdo Event Center, 1399 35th Street; the concert location is TBA. Get more information and purchase tickets at www.medcancup.com.
