Poetry in Motion

Poet Ginny Hoyle, a member and instructor at Denver’s Lighthouse Writers, and artist Judy Anderson of PlatteForum created the tag-team installation When We Were Birds, which opened last month at Walker Fine Art for a run through May 7. But to see the results of their collaborative effort wasn’t quite enough for the duo; they wanted to see more community interactivity around it. Taking a cue from the Kirkland Museum’s annual Ekphrastic Poetry event, which features poems inspired by artworks in the museum — not to mention the fact that it’s National Poetry Month — the pair will host a group of Lighthouse poets reading their responses to the installation tonight at the gallery, 300 West 11th Avenue. For Hoyle, it will deepen and extend the act of collaboration in new and unexpected ways.

“We thought that would be a nice way to combine things,” Hoyle explains. “The responding poets come in to look at the work and the process, then relate to what they see, writing something that may or may not describe the work. It will be interesting to see how people’s minds work; to get this viewpoint is fun. And it’s also a party, simply because Denver is such a great place for poetry.”

Writer’s Buzz: Art Sparks Art—Inspiration That Cuts Across Disciplines begins at 6:15 p.m. with a short talk by Hoyle and Anderson and free viewing time in the installation; at 7 p.m., the visiting poets will read their art-inspired reflections.
