The aptly named Rarities & Oddities, Ballet Nouveau Colorado’s season closer, is a don’t-miss show, according to artistic director Garrett Ammon — and he would know. “Anyone who loves contemporary dance is going to love it,” he promises, “and anyone who hasn’t seen us, this is the perfect chance to come and check out a really diverse show.”

Rarities & Oddities comprises four world-premiere works created by four different choreographers, all of whom Ammon gave amazing license to create what they wanted. The proof is in the lineup: Attendees will be treated to dancing pandas, shadow puppets, a through-the-looking-glass-style piece and a look at gesture and movement as alphabet and language.

Bringing together such diverse works “can certainly be challenging,” Ammon acknowledges, “especially when you’ve given the choreographers such a broad palette to work from. They’ve been given permission to journey deep into their minds and explore these ideas.”

And the result is bound to please old and new fans of BNC. “We wanted to express to the audience some feeling of what we were trying to do with the program,” Ammon notes. “We’re always creating new work; we like to push our art form forward and try innovating things.”

Between the dancing pandas and shadow puppets, we’d say the company has succeeded.
