Wet and Wild in Vail
“To me, the World Pond Skimming Championships represent diving into a new season and going out with a splash to celebrate the spectacular snow year we’ve just had,” says event spokeswoman Kelly Patton. Still, you won’t catch her getting her feet wet when the competition kicks off in Vail. “Oh, hell, no. I leave it to much braver souls than myself. I prefer to grab a beer and join the ginormous crowd of spectators.”
Pond skimming, of course, involves skiing down a short hill, hitting a ramp and landing in a pond, then trying to stay upright for as long as possible. Patton says this year’s pond — aka Lake Golden Peak — is about 100 feet long, guaranteeing that just about every-one will end up in the drink (one competitor from last year’s splashdown spectacle made the highlight reel in ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Week), adding that this year’s prizes include a 2011-2012 Epic Pass. “The Golden Skimmer is a coveted title around these parts, and if you can win that Epic Pass you’ll be all set for next season. But you’d better bring it: People go all out for this event, with crazy costumes and the works.”
