Get Animated

Without Japan, there would be no Japanese animation, so local fans of the art form have come together to create the Rave to Save Japan, a massive benefit and dance party that will raise money to help people affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami.

“We will match everything we raise dollar for dollar, with 100 percent of our donations going to the Japanese Red Cross,” says Jinnie McManus, spokeswoman for the Rocky Mountain Anime Association, which is sponsoring the event. There will be a silent auction and carnival-style games, and DJ Bullock will spin the best in Top 40, J-pop and J-rock (that’s Japanese pop and rock). The cosplayers and Gothic Lolitas will be out in full regalia, as well, though costumes are not required.

Also in the house will be the organizers of the annual Nan Desu Kan anime convention, who welcome this opportunity to raise funds for Japan. Anticipated attendance for this year’s NDK convention, which takes place in September, is over 20,000; based on those numbers, organizers felt that interest would be high for today’s event as well.

The Rave takes place at the Marriott DTC, 4900 South Syracuse Street; all ages are welcome, and there is a suggested donation of $10 at the door. For more information on the Rave and on special hotel room rates, visit www.ndkdenver.org.
